What is Kizomba?

The story of this dance goes back to Angola in the 80s. It was created based on the Semba, Angolan dance, which was combined with traditional African rhythms and modern European music.
Kizomba is a couple dance that is second to none in terms of sensuality.
The name comes from the language root of Kimbundu and means:
Feast, bauble, dance, entertainment.
Kizomba was born in Angola based on the Semba, which was combined with traditional African rhythms and modern European music.
Kizomba is one of the most popular music and dance styles in Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa (Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe). The dance was later brought to Portugal by immigrants and so Kizomba found his way to us.
Semba, in turn, is a dance and music style that originated in Angola and found its way into Brazilian music through slaves. Semba has a faster rhythm.
Kizomba is often referred to as the "soft African tango" due to the tight dance posture of Argentine tango.
From the point of view of Europeans, Kizomba is a great blend of reggaeton, merengue, bachata and argentine tango.
The Cape Verdean Kizomba style differs from Angolan by the use of creole instead of Portuguese, its style is much slower, more harmonious and romantic. The best-known artists are among others.
Mika Mendes, Nelson Freitas, Anselmo Ralph, Chelsy Shantal, Ricky Boy, Twen-ty Fingers.
Kizomba is very widespread in Portugal, Spain, England, France and the Netherlands, and there are now organized festivals only for Kizomba in Europe.

Kizomba is a dance that lets you dream and relax, immerse yourself in music and movement, and simultaneously connect people ...

The story of this dance goes back to Angola in the 80s. It was created based on Semba, Angolan dance, which was combined with traditional African rhythms and modern European music.
Kizomba for us is not just the dance steps and step combinations, Kizomba is both a sense of trust in the dance partner and diving deep inside.

Come and learn with us this sensual dance or extend your basic knowledge of musicality and Tarraxinha hours.

What is Urban Kiz?

Urban Kiz as dance, is a subtype of Kizomba which was born from the new Kizomba styles of music(Zouk Bass, Ghetto Zouk, etc) that the Producers brought to the market and DJs played at the parties and at festivals.

Urban Kiz is characterized by brusc changes in the rhythm and flow of the dance, lots of syncopation(contratempo), the leading and following process is lineal and the dancers can mix between a straight/elegant posture to a relaxed one, the figures selection require a lot of technique, control of balance and body isolation (especially for tarraxinha and tarraxa/o), and the focus is usually put on total musicality and interpretation of the songs, distance between dancers, turns and spins, and flow contrasts.

What is the difference between Kizomba and Urban Kiz?

In comparison with Kizomba this style is more technical, dancers can have distance between each other allowing space for styling (Kizomba the frame is much closer), Urban is a lineal dance and Kizomba the motions are more circular (a good comparison: Kizomba is like Cuban salsa and Urban Kiz is more like L.A. Style Salsa), musicality is brought to the limits in Urban Kiz as in Kizomba the interpretation of the music is not as exact, Urban Kiz is technically more challenging for the follower as on the other side Kizomba puts more focus on the flow using relaxed rounded motions where the follower feels secure in the frame of the leader and achieve complete relaxation. But don’t be mistaken Urban Kiz can be as relaxed as Kizomba or even more especially when dancing on douceur. The music difference is also important as Kizomba is mostly sung in portuguese, as Urban Kiz dancers dance on R&B mixes and covers, Ghetto Zouk, Tarraxinha, even Dance Hall & Hip Hop mixes.
